AT&T Unit Settles Government Fraud Charges
Thursday, 29 June 2006
A unit of AT&T has agreed to pay $2.9 million to settle claims that it defrauded the U.S. government over certain fees the company charged between 1998 and 2001, the U.S. Department of Justice said Tuesday.

AT&T Communications-East had been accused passing on to government customers fees that long-distance telephone companies pay to local carriers for providing facilities that link customers to the network.

The Justice Department said passing on the fees was violated the terms of AT&T's contract with the government. The lawsuit was filed by a whistle-blower who would be eligible to receive part of the settlement. An AT&T spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
