The Academic Awards Program is now accepting scholarship applications from college-bound students of U.S.-based Alcatel-Lucent employees for the 2008/2009 school year. The program is aimed at helping these employees put their children through college. Students who apply must have participated in volunteer service activities and projects in their communities or schools.
There are two separate competitions open to children of full-time and part-time U.S. employees. Children of 15 union-represented employees will receive awards under the 2008 Lucent Technologies CWA/IBEW Academic Awards Program and 15 children of employees who are not union-represented will receive awards under the 2008 Alcatel-Lucent Academic Awards Program. Scholarship recipients are selected by a third-party vendor – Scholarship America - on the basis of academic achievement and service to the community and school. Alcatel-Lucent employees do not have any input into the selection of recipients, who will then be notified in April, 2008. Originally developed with the Communication Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the Academic Awards Program grants 30 high school seniors awards of up to $6,500 to apply toward college expenses -- tuition, books, and room and board -- for one academic year of full-time undergraduate study. Past recipients can apply for an annual renewal, for up to three consecutive years, as long as they remain eligible under the program guidelines, which include maintaining a college grade point average above 2.75. High school seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25, who have contributed to the community, and have parents who are U.S.-based employees, are encouraged to apply. Additional information and applications, which must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2007, are available at: http://aww22.alcatel.com/static/learning/academic_awards/.
