On November 6, 2007 AT&T announced in Atlanta a transition of work to the Atlanta Client Care Center @ 2800 Century Center Pkwy from Legacy S, and Bellsouth. There are currently 8 Help Desk Centers across the country and they will be closing 5 centers in 2008 with 3 remaining. The work being performed was managed and staffed by SBC managers and occupationals at the Help Desk Centers, but I have not yet completely verified this. At the Bothel, Washington office, after attempts by CWA/WashTech, about 100 employees rejected an opportunity to being organized and joining CWA.
It seems the functions of the closing offices were mainly ID administration (create, modify, delete ID’s). AT&T Management has referred to this as IBM work that is still in the organizational stage and as soon as a process is created, it will be determined how the work will be distributed. I was under the impression that SBC and AT&T Mobility did not use IBM as a support contractor for ID administration, so this may be a direct result of the new 5 year alliance with AT&T and IBM. The Atlanta Client Care office has always been staffed with bargaining unit members, so this may turn out to be new bargaining unit work. We have not been assured if this new work will increase the occupational ranks in the Atlanta office. One of our concerns is they may be transferring this work as an interim move until IBM can completely take over the work then to close the 3 centers that would be left. The 3 Remaining Centers and timelines are as follows: 1. Atlanta- SCS supported by Legacy S management will be transitioned to occupational employees effective 3/2008 New systems to be introduced into the Atlanta office are: Toolbar effective 5/2008 Dash effective 10/2008 These functions are Id resets. 2. Plano, Texas - Bellsouth Mobility 1/2008 3. St. Louis - ESH (Employee Service Helpdesk) 7/2008 The employees will support all work in the Corp Help Desk, which supports Wireless, Legacy S and Bellsouth. Training is to start immediately for the Atlanta office. The 5 Closing Centers are: 1. San Diego, California 2. San Ramon, California 3. Bothel, Washington 4. Hoffman Estates, Illinois 5. Birmingham, Alabama Note: Local 3250 was informed by AT&T that this is a restructuring of the work and that occupational employees currently performing the work will be given an opportunity to follow it. We were also advised that some of this work will be transferred to the Client Care Center at 2800 Century Center, Atlanta and occupational employees located in Local 3250's jurisdiction, including DPA's at Alpharetta, GA will not be impacted by a lay-off.
