Union membership grew last year across the country, and for the first time since 1983, unions nationwide saw their share of members increase.
Labor groups added about 310,000 members last year across the country and raised their share of the workforce from 12 percent in 2006 to 12.1 percent last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. "The numbers reflect enthusiasm among workers to form and join unions despite a record level of resistance from employers," said Rebekah Friend, executive director and president of Arizona AFL-CIO. "I think when the economy suffers, more people like to find steady jobs, which unions often provide." |
