Let the Debates Continue
Thursday, 25 September 2008

McCain, here is a man who last week said that the fundamentals of our economy are strong and 6 months ago said that he knows little about economics. Now he wants to use his new found revelations on economics to rush through an economic package that was drawn up in secrecy, is not transparent, lacks oversight and gives unbridled power to an unelected cabinet post. McCain wants to cancel the presidential debate so no one will know what the facts are as this administration rushes a bill through congress that will cost us 700 billion dollars (not including the billions spent last month on bailouts).

Let the debate go on.

The American people deserve and are entitled to hear the presidential candidates’ positions on this so called financial crisis. This needs to be done in the open so we can see what we the people, our children, and our grandchildren are going to have to pay for. It needs to be done before the corporate CEO’s receive their golden parachutes and immunity from prosecution for creating this financial mess.

The debates should not be canceled.

We spent 40 years under the threat of nuclear annihilation, and nobody canceled anything. The candidates can take two hours out of there schedules to debate their position on the finances of our country. The American people should have an opportunity to review the facts so they can decide on the facts instead of relying on half truths and misleading information that were discussed behind closed doors. Let this debate and discussion be conducted in the light of day so the people can decide what the direction of the country should be.

Let the people lead and the government follow.

America belongs to the people not to the banking industry and the corporate interests. Haven’t they already done enough to us? Both presidential candidates should at least have the decency to let the people decide on the direction of our country by sharing the facts and consequences that this 700 billion dollar bailout is going to have on us.

In unity,

Roy Hegenbart
President
